Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society perform The Gondoliers at The Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne.  Review by Gregory Gower

Having researched the archives of this Society, I found that the first presentation of this opera was in 1971.  The cast were: Sheila Davidson, Joan Clark, Jill Spence, Joyce Robinson, Valerie Turner, Roy Higgins, Arthur Callow, Alan Leach, John Clarke and Douglas Crosby-Jones.   Probably insignificant to the casual reader, but when you think this was only the second production in the Society’s history and all members being Gilbert & Sullivan enthusiasts.  This was indeed pioneering stuff!

Come to the fair at The High Weald

The High Weald will have its first ever Green Fair on June 9th at Mayfield Memorial Hall.

Organised by local environmental groups it’s intended to bring people together who are interested in greener and more sustainable living.

The Show Must Go On!

Recession seems to have a knock-on effect and you wonder why when obtaining the copyright of a well known Musical whether it will be “Make or Break” for that one week contract.  In Eastbourne at the Congress Theatre, originally built for National and local conferences, to put on a show, one must expect to spend at least in the region of £50,000, next year that rate could increase, which will put amateur societies treasurers purse strings on a more tight-rope tension on whether it is going to be a feasible proposition to perform at professional venues in the future.

The Rattonians Youth Group present OLIVER! at The Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne.   Review by Gregory Gower

From the very beginning you could feel by the reaction of the audience made up of Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers and other family members the high expectation of a faultless performance and we received much, much more – it was perfect!  The detail of each characterisation was phenomenal from the eponymous Oliver right down to the smallest and youngest person on stage.

Lewes Operatic Society - presentation of The Pirates of Penzance

A Gilbert & Sullivan Opera

Review by our arts correspondent Gregory Gower

The action takes place on 28th February 1957, the day before Frederics’ birthday played by Andrew Simpson, which is unfortunate for him as the story goes he is an Apprentice to a Pirate instead of a Pilot due to a misunderstanding by Ruth’s hard of hearing played by Caz Streeter.  The unfortunate bit being his apprenticeship is up on his 21st birthday and finding out that he is only five and a quarter in age going by his birth date (29th February) he is utterly devastated that the Pirate King is demanding he remain true to the pirate code.  Obviously he has to renounce his loyalty to Mabel played by Jane Tingley, her father, the Major-General Stanley played by Andy Freeman and the rest of her sisters.
